When I day dream I dream of multiple doctorates, scientific advances, and interviews on NPR. I don't know maybe I was one of those boring geeky kids but spaceman and rock star were not my professions of choice.

That's not to say they didn't cross my mind just that even at the age of nine or ten I thought becoming a world renowned scientist would be ever so much more glamorous. But here I am some kid who works for pennies trying to start a company that doesn't have much sex appeal at the moment. Wishing I could speak at conferences, invent standards, and hold a place of influence in my industry. That's why reading things like this is even more depressing. How can two thirty something guys have accomplished so much already?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

"How can two thirty something guys have accomplished so much already?"

Answer: PhDs from Stanford.

But don't let that discourage you, there are many successful business people who contribute much to their fields as well as to the world - who do it not because they have a degree or even a rich father who brought them into the business. They are successful because they have passion, hope and determination. And you don't need a degree for that!

Consider two of your home-town "heros"

Heroes? Oh man, I have no desire to be the CEO / owner / cofounder / whatever of one of the most annoying companies on earth. In fact I would have to say Google's reputation is the absolute antithesis of Amway's. Google is known for respecting their customers and doing everything in their power to not bang people over the head with advertising. Amway is simply known for twisting arms and invading people's homes.

That's not my point though, and I don't think it's yours. You're just trying to remind me that anything is possible even without a rich father to pay my school bills. I'm simply in awe of the fact that these guys had what it took to get a Ph.D. from Stanford. And I'm even more impressed by the amazing technology that is Google - simple, elegant, powerful. I'm just day dreaming about making something as amazing some day.

One way or another thanks for writing, but you didn't answer the more pressing question: what do you want to be when you grow up byrdsong?

Amway has to be one of the most annoying entrepeneurships that one can take part in. Harass your friends and family into buying shit they don't want or need. That's one heck of a business!
